White Trash Journal, Volume II
by Charles W. Fairbanks
The MFP Truth Squad is going to examine the truth of the liberal elitist attitude toward Main Street America. This week, both Al Franken and Congressman Charlie Rangel win the MFP prize for the outstanding snotty remark about Governor Palin.
Al Franken and Charlie Rangel, what a pair! Al Franken is the Don Corleone of Drivel, having not written a funny apolitical line in a dozen years. Charlie Rangel is the Clown Prince of the Kleptocracy, drawing huge and sometimes tax free profits as the result of his position as a liberal Congressman from New York. Separately they are each very offensive. Together they are greater than the sum of their parts.
Somehow the Minnesota DFL nominated Franken for a US Senate seat. This past week, he used his influence with the once-great Saturday Night Live to suggest and create a very toxic skit in which Todd Palin, the First Man of Alaska, was shown to be the father of his own grandson. That is, he is portrayed as having an affair with his own underage daughter, which would make him guilty of aggravated sexual assault. This skit is based not on some creative genius on the part of Franken (he has none), but on rank stereotype. The stereotype of a Southern or rural or western family includes incest. You’ve heard the jokes. As someone who has roots in Appalachia, I have heard them. Make no mistake, Franken was drawing on deep-seeded prejudice held by members of the liberal elite against people from outside the progressive urban centers.
The fact that Charlie Rangel is still a member of the House despite his rather obvious ethical problems speaks volumes to the double standard in Washington. Democrats seem to get away with just about anything under the cover of their media allies. Rep. Rangel this week referred to Governor Palin as disabled. Again, this was not the statement of a brilliant mind, but the expression of the attitude held by liberals that those who do not agree with them are stupid.
Together, these two leading lights of the left, have expressed two elements of the stereotyped view that liberals hold of the rest of us. Is this really who we want running our government? There is nothing we can do about Rangel - he has what amounts to lifetime tenure. Franken can be beaten in his election. We can also beat their leader, the man who thinks that we cling to our Bibles and our guns out of despair, Sen. Barack Obama.
